No more 'Supersize Me', just 'Foot Longs'

Anybody see the news, footlong everything fast food is all the rage south of the border. It's everything from hotdogs, chicken fried something to foot long hamburgers. Seriously? One wellknown breakfast company has got into the act by taking a foot long bun, lining it on both sides with cheese and egg, then side by side hashbrowns down the middle. R.I.P. my arteries.
When did we forget about portion sizing and having real food? Not sure why restaurants think cheap food in poor quality but huge quantity, that you suffer for hours later, is a good thing. A good meal should leave you feeling satisfied, replete but not reaching for the antiacid, etc unless you went for something spicy.
Real food, beautifully presented, with that wow factor when you take that first bite isn't hard to do and it doesn't cost anymore. Not when you buy it and not later in your doctor's office. It doesn't matter if you love home cooking or the latest trendy exotic, quality wins over quantity everytime, certainly in my world.
When you visit the grocery store, any grocery store, the real food is around the outside walls. Vegetables are usually the first things you see, a wonderful display of fresh colour, then the cheeses, maybe the bakery, followed by the meat department and lastly the dairy. All the prepared stuff, frozen treats, etc are down the center.
And that isn't all bad, in the winter months getting your produce from the freezer section often gets you better quality that from the fresh produce depending on from where it was shipped in. But taking a panini or a bag of flavoured rice from the freezer and popping it in the microwave, well that is the other side of the coin.
So forgive me, that was my rant for the day. But truly I was horrified to see in an era when they talk about US citizens, and Canadians are not that far behind, are the most overweight they have ever been that chain food providers are rushing to offer even worse options. Don't get me wrong, selfcontrol is a good thing and we all need to indulge in a little more of that at times, but why is the opposite being pushed across the counter? I vote for going to the little corner place, that one of a kind, or maybe something from another culture, where the food is good, made on the premises and the taste, well that will leave you wanting more and telling all your friends about it. And cook at home, that room with the appliances is designed for your culinary inspiration. Enjoy it and experiment once in a while.
That's all from me, eat well and have a wonderful day.
